Personality
Mayoi Ayase is a nervous wreck of a human being. He comes off timid and anxious, seemingly in constant fear of garnering the ire of those around him. He is way more willing to climb into the ceiling than have a conversation with another person, and will simply run from situations that he deems himself unable to handle. Despite this, Mayoi is an unbelievably talented idol and in fact, an incredibly brave person, there is just a lot layers to pull open before we see exactly why that is. Mayoi is a deeply complicated mess of yarn barf, that one has to gently pick and pull at to untangle in order to see him for who he is.
To do this, it's important to look at where he came from. With his temperament it's easy to make some wild assumptions about his upbringing, and Mayoi does not dissuade or correct this in any way. In fact, when it comes to asking him anything about himself, Mayoi is expert in the way he shuts down questions by deflection, or simply saying things like "That is incredibly boring and worthless topic" or "There are much better things to discuss the details of than someone like me." Mayoi is happy to completely marginalize himself to push the topic away from him at his own expense while giving nothing away. It allows people to make their own assumptions and so he can keep the truth to himself. Mayoi is someone who holds a world of secrets on his shoulders, and him keeping them is a matter of life and death for him and his family. For you see, Mayoi belongs to a clan of people who have been exiled underground for hundreds of years. Their discovery would be nothing short of catastrophic. To clarify, Mayoi's canon takes place in modern-day Japan. His family has lived underground pre-dating the koseki or the Japanese family registry. Without it, he has no birth certificate, no valid identification, and so they are not considered citizens of Japan. By law, Mayoi and his family are without basic human rights.
Mayoi's background plays such an intrinsic part of how he conducts every aspect of his life. Mayoi works as an idol with forged documents, chasing a dream that he should by all rights abandon. Walking a delicate tightrope of fear and hope just so he can see it through. Mayoi is so careful about his identity because he has so much to lose, but despite all the reasons he shouldn't take such a monumental risk, he presses on. If you were to ask him, he'd say it was because he is a selfish, shameless person living at the expense of others, but if that were really the case, his clan wouldn't have worked hard to get him his documents. Mayoi represents something both to himself and his family. Hope that maybe one day the world could accept them, though basked in shadows they are.
Which is something important to understand about Mayoi, too. Mayoi has left a home with it's own secluded culture of hundreds of years, to try and blend in with a world so vastly different from how he was brought up, and he actively struggles to cope with it. Mayoi cannot handle large crowds without falling ill or fainting, he is wretched with sunlight and will also get sick if exposed for too long. Anything that involves him having to interact with lots of strangers or unfamiliar situations will risk him completely mentally shutting down, and his ability to conduct himself like a normal person in social situations is incredibly dire. He also has a history of panic attacks when he is overwhelmed. Mayoi has accomplished a lot for himself, but that doesn't mean he isn't fighting every day of his life just to keep himself together in order to do this. On top of this, Mayoi also suffers from intrusive thoughts that will often plague him with nasty, twisted versions of his real feelings and his inexperience around others means that sometimes he lets those thoughts out without realizing it.
Mayoi is also not without his faults, either, though they can be informed better knowing all of this background. Mayoi is often a pessimist and a worrywart. He tends to bend easily when someone with a more bold personality tries to have their way. He has an unhealthy fixation on things (and people) who are cute and fragile-seeming, and can be very unnormal about it. He has a very poor concept of boundaries. He is happy to sneak around in the dark to watch and observe others, often without their consent, and to him that is just how he interacts with the world around him. His idea of participating with others is to simply stand in the back and watch, and that suits him just fine. He is also very self-deprecating on a normal basis. While a portion of this can actually be explained as a self-defense mechanism to hide a truth he doesn't want revealed, he does on some level also believe what he is saying about himself. He is a harsh perfectionist, and is his own worst critic, but more than that, Mayoi contends with what can be explained as a multi-generational inferiority complex that is inseparable from his identity as an Ayase. The Ayase clan were banished originally for being "Weak" and that "Weakness" is something that has clung so viciously to them all these hundreds of years so that it is not an insult, so much as it is a fact. Mayoi believes that he is a weak person just as someone might believe they have blonde hair, and nothing will convince him otherwise. Mayoi isn't here to prove that he isn't a weak person. Mayoi does everything he does, he walks his dangerous path, puts himself in situations that are agonizing to his health, for a high profile life style that could ruin everything he holds dear, all so he can prove that being weak doesn't mean he can't have a shot at happiness.
Happiness, as it turns out, is Mayoi's central motivation. His desire to keep moving forward is tied to something he has been lead to believe he is unworthy of by birth. Mayoi is someone who has grown up bathed in a unique, crippling loneliness that pushed him until he couldn't stand it anymore. Mayoi left the safety of his shadows, for something brighter and better, and he stubbornly pushes forward despite his upbringing, his body, and his own thoughts fighting him all the way, all so he can stand on a bright, shining stage along side his most precious people, and proclaim that creatures like him exist, and they too, would like to be loved by others.
